Cloze Maker Tool
[Any Language with spaces between words]
This Cloze Text Generator modifies a given text by systematically replacing every _th word (as specified by the user) with a blank represented as “___”. The resulting output retains the structure of the original text but with periodic gaps for learners to fill in, making it a useful tool for studying and assessment.
How It Works
- User Input:
- The instructor or student pastes or types a text into the text area.
- They specify a number in the 2nd input box to determine which words will be replaced with blanks.
- Example: If the number is 5, every 5th word will be replaced with a blank.
- Processing:
- The system recognizes all the words in the text, and every _th word in the sequence is replaced with “___”.
- The system uses whitespace (the empty space between words) to recogize words, so you may need to add spaces between words when using the tool for languages that do not have spaces between words, such as Chinese or Japanese.
- The modified text is displayed in the result section.
- Separately at the bottom, the missing words are compiled in a comma-separated list.
- Result Format:
- The final output retains spaces and punctuation but has missing words.
- It remains readable but requires the user to infer and fill in the blanks based on context.
- The teacher or student can make use of the word list or not.
- At first, the words in the word list are arranged in the same order as they appeared in the original text (this makes it easy for students to check their answers); however, the teacher or student can click the “Shuffle” button to randomize the order of the words in the words list, and this way, the word list can be used when trying to solve the cloze exercise.
How Instructors and Students
Can Use Cloze Texts for Study
Cloze texts are powerful tools for language learning, comprehension practice, and knowledge recall. Both instructors and students can use them effectively in various ways:
For Instructors
✔ Assess Reading Comprehension: By removing key words from a passage, instructors can test students’ ability to infer missing information from context.
✔ Enhance Vocabulary Retention: Instructors can create exercises that remove specific vocabulary words, encouraging students to recall and use them in context.
✔ Grammar Practice: By targeting specific parts of speech (e.g., verbs, prepositions), instructors can design cloze tests to reinforce grammar rules.
✔ Customizable Difficulty: Adjusting the Nth word rule allows instructors to control the challenge level of the exercise.
✔ Interactive Learning: Used as classroom activities, cloze tests can engage students in group work, discussions, or competitions.
For Students
✔ Self-Study for Language Learning: Filling in missing words improves recall and fluency in a foreign language.
✔ Practice for Standardized Tests: Many exams, such as TOEFL, IELTS, and JLPT, include cloze-style questions to assess language proficiency.
✔ Enhance Active Reading Skills: Filling in blanks forces students to engage deeply with the text, improving comprehension and retention.
✔ Reinforce Memory of Key Concepts: Students can use cloze tests to review historical facts, scientific concepts, or any subject that requires recall.
