What Is Paragraph Unity?
Paragraph unity means that every sentence in the paragraph supports the main idea introduced by the topic sentence. A unified paragraph stays focused. It does not go off topic, introduce unrelated ideas, or include irrelevant details. If a sentence does not help explain, support, or develop the topic sentence, it breaks the unity of the paragraph and should be removed or revised.
Example:
Topic Sentence:
Studying in a quiet place can help students concentrate better.
Supporting Sentence 1:
Quiet environments reduce distractions like noise and movement.
(Good Unity)
Supporting Sentence 2:
A calm space makes it easier to focus on reading and writing tasks.
(Good Unity)
Supporting Sentence 3: To graduate, most students need to acquire the minimum number of credits and all required courses for their chosen major. (Off Topic)
Supporting Sentence 4:
Libraries and study rooms are among the best places for concentration.
